About the Instructor

Having lived, traveled and studied internationally, Mercedes Cohan, the creator and instructor of Online Spanish Classes, took the next most natural step: teaching language with her unique style and passion for students and learning. Since 1990, she has been an independent instructor in Portland, OR, earning a reputation for excellence and a loyal student base in a field where traditional approaches leave many students feeling lost and disoriented.

For 28 years she has coordinated the Spanish Language Program at Oregon Health Sciences University as well as teaching Spanish classes for the Parks and Recreation of both Lake Oswego and Tualatin Hills.

Working with the Spanish-speaking community locally, she has taught English as a Second Language (ESL). Beginning in March 2020, Mercedes brought her mastery of multi-media formats to the Virtual Classroom, using every aspect of the ZOOM platform to encourage interactive learning, giving the students what they sign up for: The joy of learning a language when traditional classroom gatherings were suddenly prohibited.

Sound files and Quizlet are tools she regularly employs to give students materials to use beyond the Virtual Classroom. Incorporating popular App-style learning (Duolingo, Babbel, Rosetta Stone, and Pimsleur) into daily routines, students often consult Mercedes with questions that the App is not designed to  explain.  Embracing these Apps herself in order to be able to serve her student body, she welcomes these inquiries, either in class or outside.

To Mercedes, learning should be fun, welcoming and interactive.  Ask her students!  They will agree. Mercedes is also available for seminars and private language intensives. Just ask! Email: spanishwithmercedes@yahoo.com
